To whomever reads this be warned Grammar/spelling were never strong points of mine.

This post is mostly therapy for me unfortunately at the cost of those that read it sorry.

I was first introduced to Video Game DRM with Splintercell Double Agent for the Wii.Yep who would have thunk it game save not copyable, at first I wrongly assumed it was a glitch in the game. The game was ok but not great so no big deal.

The thought that this procedure of copy protecting Game saves
was ever intentional never crossed my mind.
So you can imagine my surprise when many months back
I went to backup the game saves on my 60gb PS3 RE5(RE5 is no longer locked) & Killzone 2 stopped me in my tracks not copyable WTF!!!!. I called Sony to find out what the hell was going on,The lady I talked to was pleasant enough but clueless all she could tell me was that it was the game developers doing not Sony's.

To this date I have yet to receive a definitive answer as to why developers are doing this. Some have surmised trophies and
sharing of game saves online are at fault here, But those
conclusions do not answer the why?.

I would imagine some of you who are reading this are saying
why does any of this even matter you DAMN CRYBABY!

My answer is this, owning a 60gb PS3 i am concerned that if it fails the time I have invested in The campaign portion of
the games will be lost I rarely complete games 100% on the first run through but do over time (months/years) go back to them to complete them.

In the event it should fail receiving a refurbished unit back from Sony which is the most likely situation will render all DRM game saves useless. But also lets consider the people who own more than one PS3 they are unable to transfer DRM saves between there own consoles so if you want to play Killzone 2 on
your 2nd machine TO DAMN BAD!! It doesn't matter that you may have 20 + hours already invested in it you just have to start over.

Back to the unanswerable question(at least definitively) WHY ARE SOME GAME SAVES LOCKED? WTF!!!! when you purchase the game has not the Developers and Sony already received there money for the F***ing game i mean g**damn is there more money they
could be making off of virtual trophies that they are not? because there are some shiftless bastards out there somewhere
selling virtual trophies for real money? COME ON!!.

If the true answer is because these guys consider them selves
Artists nuf said I don't share it but I do understand the mind set.

So if anyone is still reading this i am open to solutions
to this dilemma, so far I have only one rent! rent! rent!
although i hate renting games I would normally buy such as
Batman,Ratchet&Clank CIT Uncharted 2 etc etc. I do so now
just to check there game saves to see if DRM is in effect.
If the game saves are DRM I don't even bother playing it let
buy it.

I feel the need to mention here that DRM must be a sensitive subject in the game developing community reason being on another
set of forums most people here are familiar with, this subject
has came up before and as one person said there, this subject
will be swept under the rug by people who may be able to find
answers. case in point a podcast a week or so ago had an interview with a rep from Insomniac and asked for questions from it's listening audience I posted will R&C have locked game saves it was not asked. Yes, I know there were other questions not asked and they can not possibly ask every question i understand that but this is a subject matter I do not have all to my self others are asking it also. I would think there is a tactful way this question could be asked of the developers in the future.

Another possible solution maybe to split the games up
if widespread DRM is the future sell the Campaign and
online game on individual discs or individual downloads.
I almost forgot a solution I have heard mentioned was for
Sony to setup a way for game saves to be allocated someplace
other than to the PS3 itself good idea with only 1 problem
not everyone has online access.

Well I feel better now, Those who play Warhawk Wenesdays
are probably feeling relieved also that they wont have to listen to me bitch about this ever again while we are playing. And if this has helped those who suffer from Insomnia your welcome.

**WRITERS NOTE**

ATTENTION!
I have recently made a condensed blog same subject also less emotional over at vgevo.com i was in a bad mood when i started typing this and only got angrier the more i typed
I apologize for nothing I wrote in this blog, only for its harsh
tone regarding Glenn and Marks podcast and their forum I am in no way looking to start a fight with them I enjoy their podcast and will continue to listen weekly as well as checkout their forum daily and recommend others to do the same.

Here here my brother! I agree 100%. I currently only have 1 of each system, but have thought about picking up a 2nd PS3 for the bedroom. I haven't done this because I want to be able to transfer 100% of my game saves to the other one so at a moments notice I can game on either. It's BS that it isn't an option.

Great Blog.

DRM is the pesticide developers spray on their products. Its supposed to help keep the pirates from eating their crop, but unfortunately the true cost is felt by the consumers who not only PAY for the product, but are sickened by the poison its packaged with.
